It's been about 10 days since I've updated my blog, so I figured I should write an update. After the OCR finished up on Saturday, January 29th, I spent all day Sunday at the annual USSTAG meeting in Miami. At the meeting we hear from all the coaches, organizers, and administrators about our program and what's in store for the coming year. It's also a great opportunity to sit down with other sailors to plan training or logistics for the next few months.
The day after the meeting, I flew home to NJ where I've gotten some time away from my boat. I've rested a bit, but also have been going to the gym and running a lot (on the treadmill, it's freezing out!). It's been nice to take some time off, but I'm starting to get anxious to get back in the boat.
On Saturday, I'm flying down to Miami. I'll load up my laser, and then on Sunday morning I'm going to drive to Clearwater where I'll train for ten days and then sail the Midwinters East Regatta at the end of the month. The Midwinters is always one of my favorite events with very good North American competition. Plus, I really enjoy sailing in Clearwater with a short sail out to the Gulf of Mexico and big waves. After that, I'll drive up North and get ready to head to Europe for the spring.
At the OCR, Gary Jobson and his team put a GoPro camera on my bow during a few races. They got some great footage which they used for some interviews. I was able to get a copy of the footage, and it's pretty cool! I decided to buy one of the cameras to use while practicing some times. Not only is the footage great, but I think this could be a good tool to critique some of my sailing. I got the "Laser Package" at the Horizon True website. They put everything you need into one convenient package for you to buy. It should be pretty cool to start using.
Here's Race Five at the Rolex Miami OCR (condensed down to about 5 minutes):
Stay tuned for more updates from Florida!
